I Am River
I Am River is a storytelling and environmental awareness project that explores our deep connection with the St. Lawrence River and the communities that depend on it. Through filmmaking, photography, and youth engagement, the project aims to reconnect people with the natural world and inspire a sense of stewardship for the waters that sustain us.
Supported by Ocean Wise’s Ocean Action grant and ATTA Society’s Art for the Future creative visionaries fund, I Am River brings together voices from across Quebec - from students and local residents to environmental leaders - to reflect on what it means to live alongside one of Canada’s most vital ecosystems. The project highlights both the beauty and the challenges facing the river, from pollution and habitat loss to the resilience of the people working to protect it.
By combining art, education, and community collaboration, I Am River serves as a platform to remind us that environmental protection begins with empathy - for our planet, for each other, and for the rivers that connect us all.
Du Fleuve
Based in Tadoussac, Du Fleuve is a family-run whale-watching company driven by a deep passion for the St. Lawrence River and its marine life. Their small-group expeditions, guided by expert naturalist captains, offer an intimate and respectful way to experience whales in their natural habitat.
We were grateful to collaborate with Du Fleuve during the I Am River project to capture breathtaking footage of these magnificent animals. Their knowledge of the river and commitment to sustainable, meaningful encounters made them the perfect partner to help us share the beauty and importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
Pêcheries Charlevoix
Located in Saint-Irénée, Pêcheries Charlevoix is a family-run fishing company that continues the centuries-old tradition of pêche à fascine, a sustainable and low-impact method unique to the St. Lawrence River. Rooted in respect for nature and local heritage, their work reflects a deep understanding of the rhythms of the river and the balance between community and environment.
As part of the I Am River project, we spent time with the family behind Pêcheries Charlevoix - documenting their daily work and engaging in conversations about how climate change and shifting river conditions have affected their fishing practices. Their openness and dedication offered a powerful perspective on how environmental change directly impacts those who live in close relationship with the river.
Through this collaboration, we aimed to honour their story and highlight the importance of preserving both cultural and ecological traditions along the St. Lawrence.
